Pool lights installed in wet niches do not need to be removed for winter, but the pool must be properly winterized so the water level is managed correctly relative to the niche and conduit entry. If the water is drained below the light niche without properly sealing the conduit, water can migrate into the conduit and reach the J-box, causing corrosion and electrical problems. Most pool service companies winterize the light circuit by blowing out the conduit, sealing the light cord, and leaving the fixture in place in the niche. In climates with hard freezes, some service professionals recommend pulling the fixture slightly out of the niche during winterization to allow any residual water to drain and prevent ice pressure from cracking the niche seal.
