A vinyl pool liner is the waterproof membrane that holds water in a vinyl liner pool. In above-ground pools the liner sits directly against the pool wall structure and rests on a sand or foam base on the ground. In inground vinyl liner pools the liner is suspended against the steel, aluminum, or polymer panel walls and rests on a vermiculite, grout, or sand floor base. The liner does all the work of keeping the water in the pool, which means its quality, thickness, and proper installation directly determine how long the pool functions before a replacement is needed.
Inground vs Above-Ground Liner Differences
Inground vinyl liner pools use a custom-cut liner measured precisely to the pool’s specific dimensions, including any step pockets, tanning ledges, or hopper configurations. Every inground liner is manufactured to order. The liner arrives flat and is stretched into position, then filled with water that pulls it tightly against every wall and floor surface. Because the liner is custom, there is no standard size or shape, and every liner order begins with a measurement by a liner specialist.
Above-ground pool liners are manufactured in standard sizes to match the standard pool sizes sold by above-ground pool manufacturers: 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, and 30-foot round pools, and standard oval dimensions. A 24-foot round liner is interchangeable between most 24-foot round pool frames regardless of brand. This makes above-ground liner replacement significantly faster and lower-cost than inground liner replacement.

The liner installation type determines how the liner attaches at the top of the pool wall and must match the pool’s wall system exactly. Beaded liners have a bead (a rounded edge on the liner) that snaps into a J-shaped receiver track mounted at the top of the pool wall. The bead holds the liner at the proper height and tension. Beaded installation gives the cleanest finished appearance because the coping covers the bead receiver track. Beaded liners require a bead receiver track to be installed on the wall before the liner can be replaced.
Overlap liners do not have a bead. The liner material runs up the pool wall and folds over the top rail, held in place by the coping strips that snap over the top. Overlap is the simplest installation method and the least expensive liner type. The tradeoff is that a fold of liner material is visible above the water line against the outside of the pool wall. For above-ground pools where the pool frame is visible from the outside, beaded or unibead installation produces a cleaner appearance.
Unibead liners, also called J-hook liners, are manufactured to work either as a beaded liner (snap into bead receiver) or as an overlap liner (hook over the top rail). The versatility comes from a J-shaped profile at the liner edge that can be trimmed to overlap configuration if needed. Unibead is the most flexible option for replacement liners ordered without knowing the exact pool wall configuration.
Expandable liners have extra material built into the floor panel to accommodate pools with deep hopper sections, sloped floors, or pools deeper than the wall height suggests. Without an expandable liner, a pool with a 6-foot hopper section and 52-inch walls would cause a standard liner to pull away from the walls at the transition from the flat shelf to the slope. Expandable liners are a must for any pool with a true deep end or hopper bottom configuration.
Liner Thickness, Color, and Water Appearance

For above-ground pools used seasonally and replaced every 5 to 8 years by choice, a 25 mil liner is a reasonable choice. For inground vinyl liner pools where liner replacement is a major project involving draining, removal, re-installation, and refilling, a 27 to 30 mil liner is the industry recommendation because the cost difference between a 25 mil and a 28 mil liner is small relative to the total project cost, but the additional thickness can add 4 to 8 years to the liner’s service life.

In a vinyl liner pool there is no plaster, no pebble finish, and no tile interior. The liner is the water’s background, and the liner color is the single biggest factor in the perceived water color. A light blue liner produces a bright, classic pool blue. An aqua or turquoise liner produces a tropical green-blue water effect. A white or light gray liner produces a very clear, nearly transparent water appearance where the bottom is always visible. Confirm the wall height of your pool before ordering: a 24-foot round pool sold with 48-inch walls takes a different liner than the same frame size sold with 52-inch walls.
