Pool Light Placement: How Many Lights Do You Need?
The general rule for pool light placement is one 400-watt-equivalent light per 150 to 200 square feet of pool surface area. A 16×32 foot pool at 512 square feet needs a minimum of two to three lights for adequate visibility. A wet niche is a sealed housing cast directly into the pool shell during construction. The light fixture sits inside the niche and is surrounded by pool water on the outside of the housing. Wiring runs through a conduit from the niche to the equipment pad. Most inground pool lights use wet niches. A dry niche is a housing where the back of the niche is sealed against the pool wall and the fixture chamber stays dry, with the lamp accessible from the dry side. The J-box (junction box) is the waterproof enclosure mounted on the pool wall or deck that connects the pool light conduit to the branch circuit wiring. Pool light brightness is measured in lumens, not watts. The wattage figure tells you how much power the fixture consumes; the lumen figure tells you how much light it actually produces.
