A Roman pool is defined by its semicircular ends. The shape originates from the bath architecture of ancient Rome, where large public thermae featured pools with curved ends that softened the transition from straight walls to water and created a sense of enclosure and formality. In modern residential pool design, the Roman shape remains one of the most popular alternatives to a purely rectangular pool because it delivers formal elegance without sacrificing swimming efficiency.
Double Roman: The Classic Configuration
A double Roman pool has semicircular curves at both ends of the pool body, creating a balanced, symmetrical silhouette that reads clearly from any viewing angle. The straight section in the middle provides efficient lap swimming lanes, while the curved ends soften the pool visually and invite full-width Roman steps at both entry points. A double Roman pool in a 16×36 foot configuration is one of the most proportionally satisfying pools available in residential gunite construction. The equal curves at both ends allow perfectly symmetrical deck layouts, formal garden axes, and colonnade or pergola structures that would look awkward with an asymmetrical pool shape.

A single Roman pool has one curved end and one straight end. This configuration is popular when the pool must be positioned against a wall, fence, or structure on one end, where a curved end would waste space or look awkward. The single Roman creates an interesting asymmetry: the curved end invites Roman entry steps and a natural gathering point, while the straight end works well for a waterfall wall, a raised spa, or a clean lap-turn wall. A Roman pool with one straight end can also work well in a contemporary setting where the full symmetry of a double Roman might feel too formal.
Full Grecian: The More Dramatic Curve
The Grecian end uses a larger semicircle, with the radius approaching or equaling the half-width of the pool. In a 16-foot-wide pool, a true Grecian end would have a radius of approximately 8 feet, creating ends that are almost perfectly half-circular. The visual effect is more dramatic and less architectural than a standard Roman end: the curves are deeper and more sweeping, and the pool silhouette looks more organic than formal. A full Grecian pool requires more total length for the same straight swim section because the ends take up more of the overall pool length. It is the most visually impressive Roman-family configuration but also the most space-intensive.

A Roman pool costs more than a simple rectangular pool of equivalent size because the curved ends require additional concrete forming or more complex fiberglass mold work, the coping must follow the curve (requiring more cuts and fitting of natural stone), and the deck layout must accommodate the curved perimeter. In gunite construction, the premium for Roman ends over a rectangular pool of the same dimensions runs approximately 8 to 15 percent. In fiberglass construction, Roman pool shells are available as catalog shapes from multiple manufacturers and carry no shape premium, but the available sizes and proportions are limited to what is in the manufacturer’s mold library.

Roman Pool End Radius: How It Affects Proportion and Cost
The end radius of a Roman pool is the single most visually consequential measurement in the design. A tight radius of 3 feet on a 16-foot-wide pool produces a subtle, almost suggested curve that reads more as a softened rectangular pool than a true Roman. A standard radius of 4 to 5 feet is the most common choice and produces the recognizable Roman silhouette most people picture. A grand radius of 6 feet or more produces a dramatic semicircle that dominates the pool visually and requires a longer total pool length to maintain a proportionally satisfying straight section. The general rule is that the straight-wall section should be at least twice the diameter of the end radius to feel like a Roman pool rather than an oval. For a 5-foot radius (10-foot diameter), a minimum straight section of 20 feet produces good proportion. A pool that is all curve and no straight wall looks like an oval, not a Roman pool.
Gunite vs Fiberglass for Roman Pool Shapes
Gunite is the best construction choice for a Roman pool with a specific custom radius. The rebar cage can be bent to any curve radius, and the nozzleman applies the concrete in layers that conform precisely to the form. A 3-foot radius, a 4.5-foot radius, or an 8-foot Grecian radius are all equally achievable in gunite. Fiberglass shells, by contrast, come in fixed catalog shapes where the end radius is determined by the mold. If the available fiberglass Roman pool shells happen to match your desired size and radius, the fiberglass option offers faster installation and lower long-term chemical cost. If your design requires a specific proportion, a deep Grecian end, a Roman-notch configuration, or any other custom geometry, gunite is the only practical choice. Poured concrete with timber or steel forms can achieve good Roman curves but is slower and more labor-intensive than gunite for curved pool walls.

Full-Width Roman Steps: The Signature Entry
Full-width Roman steps built into the curved end of the pool are the most distinctive and most historically authentic entry feature for a Roman pool. The steps descend into the pool across the full width of the Roman end, creating a broad, welcoming entry that feels nothing like a standard corner step configuration. Swimmers descend side by side across the full width of the pool, and the steps themselves are visible from the opposite end as an architectural feature rather than a functional afterthought. The steps follow the curve of the Roman end, so each step is slightly shorter than the one above it as they descend into the bowl of the curve. This creates a natural amphitheater-like appearance that is one of the most recognizable visual signatures of the Roman pool style. ANSI/NSPI-5 riser and tread requirements apply to Roman entry steps: maximum riser height of 12 inches and minimum tread depth of 10 inches per ANSI/NSPI-5. Most builders use 7 to 8-inch risers for a comfortable descent. The nosing on each step should use a contrasting tile color to mark the step edge clearly.

Classical Water Features for Roman Pools
The most historically appropriate water features for a Roman pool are scupper wall spouts, wall-mounted fountain masks, and formal fountain jets. Scupper spouts are horizontal pipe outlets that project slightly from a wall face, allowing water to arc from the spout into the pool below. They appear in ancient Roman bath architecture and in Renaissance garden pools and are a direct reference to the historical tradition. Wall-mounted fountain masks or lion-head wall fountains are a more decorative version of the same idea: water spills from an ornamental stone or cast-stone mask mounted on the pool wall or on a formal garden wall behind the pool. Vertical fountain jets positioned in the Roman ends of the pool, pointing straight up and arcing gracefully before falling back into the water, are a formal feature that reinforces the axis and symmetry of the double Roman configuration. Sheer descent waterfalls on the straight walls of a Roman pool introduce a more contemporary element but work well in hybrid formal-contemporary designs. Deck jets should be positioned to respect the symmetry of the pool: either centered on the pool axis or placed in equal numbers on both sides.

A Roman pool invites formal garden treatment more than any other pool shape. Symmetrical hedge lines running parallel to the pool’s long axis, topiary and topiaries placed at the four corners of the deck, and a formal axis that extends from the center of one Roman end through the pool to the center of the other Roman end and continues into the garden beyond are all traditional design moves that work naturally with the double Roman silhouette. A colonnade is a row of columns that frames the pool on one or both long sides, creating a covered walkway at pool level. Colonnades are expensive, typically adding $15,000 to $45,000 to the project cost, but they create an outdoor room around the pool that no amount of landscaping can replicate. A pergola is a lighter version of the colonnade: an overhead structure of beams and rafters without closed walls or a roof, providing filtered shade and a strong architectural frame without the full cost of a colonnade. Raised terrace surrounds, where the pool is set within a level stone platform elevated above the surrounding garden, are another classical device that works particularly well with a Roman pool on a sloped site.
